BEST - Basic Education and Skills Training

The Basic Education and Skills Training Program is an employment preparation program that assists youth and adults with self-development skills, pre-employment skills, GED preparation and general upgrading. Curriculum is individualized to meet each learner's specific educational background, interests, strengths, needs and goals. Learners work at their own pace in a non-threatening environment. The BEST program offers a full-time, Monday to Friday program from 9am to 3pm. The program length is twenty-four weeks however it may vary for each individual depending on commitment and skill level.

Learners in the BEST program are involved in all aspects of the learning process. They are encouraged and guided towards control of their own learning. This includes setting goals and choosing materials.

Learners acquire skills that will increase their independence, their self-esteem and their chances for successful employment.

This program is supported by The Department of Social Development.

What some past learners had to say about the BEST program:

"The program has made an impact in all areas of my life. My self-esteem has grown and I have more confidence."

"I feel that everything is going well. I hope very much to get my GED and I enjoy being in school. One day I would like to help other people in my situation just like others have helped me."

"Since coming back to school and being in the BEST program, things have changed. I've been working to get my GED but the program includes many things. Socializing with others, group work, learning job skills. It provided me with a warm and caring, not a fast paced environment."
