Our Mission & Philosophy
Our Mission
The Saint John Learning Exchange is a literacy education centre that strives to help people to achieve their goals. We provide a positive and supportive learner-centered environment through respect for the individual and self-paced learning programs for adults, youth and families. Through education, community events and partnerships with other organizations we promote life long learning and the importance of literacy.
Our Purpose
Literacy Education strengthens communities and empowers adults, youth and families. Through education, community events and partnerships with other organizations the Saint John Learning Exchange promotes life long learning and the importance of literacy.
Our Philosophy
Many Canadians cannot read and write as well as they need to or want to. We believe literacy programs should be available at no cost to these people. Access to literacy should be a right.
We believe learning is a life-long process, which can be started at any time. Adults need a learning environment in which they are fully involved. As well, their dignity and individuality must at all times be respected.
Further, we feel adults learn best when they make choices, about what they will learn and how they will learn it. Each adult's unique life experience is a basis for further learning.
We believe that anyone can learn to read and write, and that people learn language by using it, both in written and spoken form. We believe that literacy enables a person to tell the world who they are, and to discover what the world has to offer them. |
